Apparently impressed by their appetite for mornings, company offers thieves a 'job'

Theft is never fun, but thankfully some people see some humour in it.

A New Zealand business called Smith Crane & Construction put up a Facebook post on Tuesday to find the people who stole their tools on Saturday morning — so they can offer them a job.

"We thought you might like to come and work for us? Maybe make an honest living instead of thieving off us?" reads the post.

It appears the owners are more impressed at the thieves' ability to get out of bed on time, have a working knowledge of power tools, and have a truck to drive around, than annoyed by the theft. Read more...

Pretty pink salads are the photogenic dish lighting up Instagram

Sure, you've heard and seen just about everything in so-called millennial pink.

OK, but how about in your salad? A pink chicory called Radicchio del Veneto is lighting up Instagram feeds and restaurants with its photogenic, bright shades of pink.

The variety of radicchio is primarily grown in the Veneto region in Italy, but is also grown in California, Pennsylvania, and in other places around the U.S., according to Eater, who dubbed its taste "slightly bitter, slightly sweet." 

The vegetable develops that pink hue by being "forced," which essentially means it's grown for a certain time, harvested, then replanted and grown in the dark so sunlight doesn't reach its stem. Read more...

Listen to an unreleased Amy Winehouse demo, recorded before she was signed

A lost demo featuring a 17-year-old Amy Winehouse has emerged, and it's predictably excellent.

The 2001 track "My Own Way," was unearthed by composer and musician Gil Cang, then shared with Camden New Journal.

A Camden local and manager of reggae label Tuff Scout, Cang told the publisher he recorded the track with a young Winehouse in his Hornsey Road studio, before her fateful signing to Island Records and 2003 debut album Frank.

Democrats introduce legislation to stop net neutrality repeal

Democrats finally introduced a resolution on Tuesday that would reverse the Federal Communications Commission's net neutrality repeal. 

Although it's been long-promised, lawmakers couldn't take action until the Federal Communications Commission officially released legislation last week that overturns net neutrality, The Hill reports. Now that it's in the Federal Register, it opens a 60 legislative day window for Congress to shut it down. Otherwise, the repeal will take effect.

Led by Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, the plan would use the Congressional Review Act — the law that lets Congress overturn agency rules with a simple majority vote — to reverse the ironically named Restoring Internet Freedom order. Obstructing speed cameras earns you hero status among some people, obviously less so by authorities.

An Australian man with an empty beer carton on his head has been filmed attempting to block the window of a police car, apparently near Tamworth, that was detecting speeding drivers.

The video was filmed and uploaded onto the Facebook page of satirical news site The Bell Tower Times. The mystery person has been since dubbed "demerit man."

Bill Gates trashes hyperloop and cryptocurrencies in AMA

Bill Gates isn't a fan of tech's popular buzzwords: cryptocurrency and hyperloop. The Microsoft co-founder hosted his sixth Reddit AMA on Tuesday, and didn't hold back on his answers. 

Gates doesn't like what most people find appealing about cryptocurrencies: anonymity.

"The Governments ability to find money laundering and tax evasion and terrorist funding is a good thing," he wrote, "I think the speculative wave around ICOs and crypto currencies is super risky for those who go long."

Evan Rachel Wood testifies to Congress about her horrifying experience with sexual abuse

Evan Rachel Wood is the latest Hollywood actress to use her fame and platform to stand up for survivors of sexual abuse and demand change for everyone.

At a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Feb 27, she was one of three women to testify about the experience of sexual assault to urge Congress to implement the Sexual Assault Survivors' Bill of Rights Act in all fifty states, rather than just on a federal level.

"I'm here today to use my position as an artist, survivor, mother, and advocate to bring a human voice to the population of 25 million survivors in the U.S. who are currently experiencing inequality under the law and who desperately need basic civil rights," she began. Read more...
