Anxiety and depression—two serious mental health conditions that doctors say are on the rise due to COVID-19. “We’re seeing a little bit more of an issue with anxiety. The quality of anxiety, so the tendency to worry about what’s coming up is changing,” said Dr. Rolando Gonzales, a child psychiatrist with Golisano Children’s Hospital. And it’s not just adults, child psychiatrist Dr. Gonzales says he’s seeing an increase in children with anxiety. “A lot of these kids were abruptly taken out of the school setting and now here we are jumping back into the school year and they are expected to do what they did before, whether it be virtually or in person.” Many children are also showing signs of social anxiety and regression. “With younger kids, some of them are regressing. They might have learned potty training effectively and now they are wetting the bed every night. Things you might not expect, but during high periods of stress they are going to happen,” he said. Doctors recommend talking to children about what they know about the coronavirus. “It’s ok to ask your children questions like how do you feel about this and what do you know about it? And then fill in the blanks,” Dr. Gonzales said. Limiting the news, keeping a set routine, and helping kids to focus on the positive changes, can all help kids better manage anxiety about COVID-19.
