Toe sitting is by far one of the most challenging of the active rest positions.⁣ ⁣ It is also the one position that when people try to do more of they ultimately often end up with pain and injury instead of improved mobility and an actual rest stimulus. This is often because of a lack of understanding of the mechanics of it.⁣ ⁣ It is a bit of a misnomer being named toe sit, as you DO NOT sit on your toes at all. The weight bearing should be on your metatarso-phalangeal joint (MTP), or called the ball of your foot.⁣ ⁣ So here is what I look for when evaluating a toe sit rest posture:⁣ ⁣ 1️⃣ athlete can sit on heels with knees fully flexed⁣ ⁣ 2️⃣ weight bearing is on the MTP joints and not the toes⁣ ⁣ 3️⃣ weight bearing on MTP joints is evenly distributed between the 5 joints⁣ ⁣ 4️⃣ heel is directly vertical the MTP joints⁣ ⁣ (Spoiler alert - if 2️⃣ and 3️⃣ are not happening 4️⃣ won’t happen!)⁣ ⁣ 5️⃣ plantar surface soft tissue is pliable and palpating does not elicit a pain or discomfort response⁣ ⁣ If these five points are not achieved then the toe sit is not a REST position and no matter how long or how many times you force it you will likely not improve.⁣ ⁣ Good news though all it takes is some pillows or pads under the knees, a towel folded under the MTP joints, a pillow between the hips and heel or all of the above to make the posture accessible and comfortable.⁣ ⁣ Accessible and comfortable means it doesn’t feel like much! (It is resting after all)! This is key to actually making a change in your mobility and nervous system. When you work with the body change happens quick and is lasting! ⁣ ⁣ This is the osteopathic approach to making change! Traditional ways of forcing and pushing the body are just not as effective and are uncomfortable!⁣ ⁣ Want to learn more about the rest postures and creating a resilient athlete?
