The 13 Investigates team was the first to uncover that Rockford Police Officer Eric Thurmond was part of an ongoing criminal investigation that eventually lead to charges of sexual assault. The 13 Investigates team used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain a number of key documents that allowed to us to report the ongoing criminal investigation more than 2 months before charges were actually filed. We were the only news organization in town to report the news. The initial report was picked up by the local paper, which cited our reporting.
