This is Mayor Brodeur. The weekly DPH COVID-19 statistics have been released and Melrose stands at 332 positive cases as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday. This represents an increase of 11 over last week’s report. Melrosians have received 16,232 tests, an increase of 1,757 over last week’s numbers. Our percent positivity rate is lower, and now stands at .75%. Nonetheless, we are still classified as yellow under the state’s assessment system. Please remember that if you want a free test, the state’s #StoptheSpread program continues to offer them as close as the Square One Mall in Saugus, one of 18 sites across Massachusetts. You do not need to have symptoms to get a free test! As you may have heard, the Baker-Polito Administration yesterday announced that effective Monday, October 5th, lower risk communities will be permitted to move into Step II of Phase III of the Commonwealth’s reopening plan. Melrose is a lower-risk community. All other communities will remain in Phase III, Step I. Governor Charlie Baker also issued a revised gatherings order. Industry specific guidance and protocols for a range of Phase I, II, and III businesses will also be updated. The Melrose Health Department is awaiting that guidance and will be prepared to answer any questions residents and business owners might have about the changes. You can find Governor Baker’s press release announcing the changes at the link. https://www.mass.gov/news/baker-polito-administration-announces-transition-to-step-ii-of-phase-iii-for-lower-risk Also, you can sign up for text updates from the state by texting COVIDMA to 888-777. https://www.mass.gov/sign-up-for-covid-19-text-message-alerts-from-the-commonwealth-of-massachusetts Speaking of our Board of Health, they are hold a drive-through flu clinic from 9:00 am - noon on Sunday Oct 4 in front of Melrose High School. This clinic is for anyone 19 years of age and older. Please fill out the insurance information form available online and bring it with you to the drive-through. All insurance carriers will be accepted except Aetna and United Healthcare. A fee of $15 will be charged for anyone not using an insurance carrier. There will be a limited supply of High Dose vaccine. Please be sure to bring your insurance card and wear short sleeves in order to make the process easier. More details at the link to the city website! https://www.cityofmelrose.org/health/news/drivethrough-flu-shot-clinic-october-4 In the meantime, keep doing the things you have been doing to keep up the fight against COVID-19: wash your hands, maintain a social distance of at least six feet, and wear a face covering whenever you might not be able to keep that distance. And please stay home if you exhibit any symptoms. Thanks again for doing all you can to keep each other safe. Keep it up, and together we will get through this.
