Jonathan Silver: Infidel in the Studio is a documentary film (41:00) on the late Brooklyn-born art historian-turned-sculptor Jonathan Silver (1937-1992) who was born into a prominent Jewish intellectual family. Known for large ethereal sculpture installations in the 1980's, the film covers conversations between Silver and several writers and curators, including his closest friend the writer Michael Brenson. The discussions and interviews cover Silver's art critical practices and views on abstract expressionism, classical and contemporary art. Silver first studied art under Meyer Shapiro for his PHD thesis at Columbia University, wrote art criticism for major US art periodicals; later as an artist his sculptures were reviewed often in the NY Times, Art in America, Art News and Sculpture Magazine. Silver’s bronzes are in the collections of the MET, Walker Art Center, city of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University, Weatherspoon Museum at UNC, Yale Art Center and private sculpture gardens of Sid and Shirley Singer and Thurston Twiggs. His work has also been shown at the Queens Museum, SculptureCenter, American Academy of Arts & Letters, NY Academy of Art, Montclair Museum and galleries Lori Bookstein, Victoria Munroe, Gruenebaum, Gremillion and Grimaldis.
