The weekly COVID-19 statistics have been released. This data reflects DPH data as of December 1. Melrose stands at 646, an increase of 72 over last week’s report. Melrosians have received 33,141 31,222 tests, an increase of 1,919 over last week’s numbers. Our percent positivity rate has risen to 3.55%, up from 3.15%. Our Average Daily Incidence Rate per 100,000 is 33.9, up from 30.3. Melrose continues to be classified yellow under the state rating system. You might be wondering how this compares to the state numbers. Overall, the daily incidence rate is 35.7 and the percent positivity rate is at 3.73%. By far, the most common cluster is still the household cluster. 9,393 new clusters have been identified between November 1 and November 28 (up 1,543) and account for 23,756 comprised of 19,786 cases (3,970). And here is updated data about the Melrose Public Schools. We have had seven cases thus far in December: 2 in-person students (one each at the Roosevelt and the middle school); 2 remote/MDLA students (one each at Hoover and MHS); one in-person employee at Roosevelt, and two remote employees (1 at Lincoln and 1 at MHS). I want to thank our students for the great job they are doing in school to keep each other safe. Another way we can keep each other safe is to refrain from holiday travel. The virus continues to spread, and traveling can make things worse. Massachusetts today reported its highest single day case count – 6,477, beating yesterday’s record of 4,613. Massachusetts is also opening two field hospitals, one in Lowell and one in Worcester. I know it is a big sacrifice to skip holiday travel plans, but it helps to control the spread of the virus. In happier news, tomorrow I will be taking the Buy Local pledge, where I commit to shopping and dining here in Melrose during this holiday season. I will have more information about the Buy Local pledge tomorrow, and I hope you will join me in taking the pledge yourselves and supporting our local businesses. Stay safe, and remember that together we will get through this.
