This is Shifting Wavelengths. It’s an augmented reality experience for mobile devices. This project emphasizes audio aesthetics and creates an artificial surround sound experience while only requiring a pair of headphones. This project uses media soundbites, interviews, testimonies, music, and sound effects to draw attention to multiple perspectives on an issue that has all too often been at the top of the news cycle: police brutality and people of color. This past summer, in addition to being bombarded with news about the global pandemic, we hear of many cases of Black Americans being injured or killed at the hands of the police. The response from people around the world was a mix of sadness, fear, and rage. And unfortunately, this was an issue in which people took “sides.” While our goal is certainly to empathize with those who are hurting and to not in any way endorse police violence against black people, we wanted to create an auditory experience that conveys the overwhelming feeling from seeing both the public outcry and pushback from such events. The AR experience draws parallels between two stories that are nearly 30 years apart. Two of the four sides contain audio which discuss the Rodney King beating from 1991. The other two refer to the killing of George Floyd in 2020. Some clips are news reports. Others are statements from police. An others still are from public figures and protestors. As the user moves throughout the room, the audio perspective shifts. Parts of the story are now emphasized based on where you choose to look. You can choose to continue to see other perspectives, or listen to one story in its entirety. The more you look around and experience the stories, the more closely you have to listen to the story you’re following.
