The May General Meeting featured Jeanne O'Donnell, Senior Program Manager for the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management. Ms. O'Donnell led the development of the County’s 5-Step Neighborhood Action Kit, which emphasizes the importance of organizing neighborhoods to be ready for many kinds of possible disasters. Her on-the-ground experience navigating floods, civil unrest, fires, earthquakes, windstorms and hurricanes were critical in the development of the Neighborhood Action Kit. This presentation was organized by the Garfield Heights Disaster Prep Committee, which is committed to preparing residents of the approximately 400 homes in our neighborhood to first help themselves and then provide assistance to neighbors in need. Depending on the size of the disaster, official rescuers may be unable to provide immediate support to our neighborhood for several days or even weeks. Normal systems will be disrupted and some of our neighbors will need our assistance. The good news is that no special training is needed to participate in the program! All it takes is getting to know your neighbors and having a basic plan in place! Find out how we can do this together. In major disasters, 70% of victims are rescued by neighbors, not professional responders.
