Transcript: Hi everyone, and welcome to Technologies for Information Services. My name is Abby, and I'll be your tutor for this unit. A little bit about myself: I'm an information specialist working in an academic library specialising in research data management and digital repositories. [Update: I've recently moved to a new role in data services in the public sector, where I am involved in projects related to metadata management, data literacy and support]. In my experience, I've found that a willingness and ability to learn and experiment with new technologies is a really valuable mindset, and an integral part of our role as information professionals so that's why I'm interested in tutoring this unit. What I wanted to do in this activity is create an opportunity for you to introduce yourselves to me but really, to each other. And given that the first assessment that [the unit coordinator] has set for you is to create a multimedia presentation, I thought this activity would be a great way to get some practice and get started thinking about some of the issues that you'll encounter when completing that assessment. One of the questions that I had for you is about your favourite or "go to" information and communication technology and one of my favourites is Slack. Slack is an instant messaging, file sharing and collaboration platform, and I've used Slack in teams where members work from home or from different offices and it's a really effective way of building a sense of community when members of the group are geographically separated. So I'm hoping that we can use Slack as our virtual tutorial space this semester. I'm going to create some different channels in Slack relating to each of the week's themes and readings, and I'll post discussion questions or activities like this one. So feel free to share, start discussions, share news articles and reports, or play around with features in Slack. Now, if you haven't used Slack before, don't worry. It might look familiar to you if you've used instant messaging applications or discussion boards. And if not, that's okay -- there are lots of online resources to help. You can always post your questions to the Slack group or send me a direct message if you have an issue. I know it can be challenging to work with a new application, so please be patient with each other. Help each other where you can and I'm going to post some community guidelines that I'd like you to read and abide by when interacting in our Slack workspace. If you have any questions for me about the course readings or the assessments feel free to send an email. You can also post a message in Slack and tag me or direct message me in Slack and I will certainly respond to you. I'm looking forward to hearing more about you and your applications. Go ahead and post your own multimedia introduction in the channel below, and I look forward to hearing from you!
