A leading children's doctor is calling for public help to fund potentially life-saving research. It is aimed at finding a faster way to diagnose sepsis. Lily Douglas looks like any other 8-year-old, but at just 18 months she faced a fight for her life. Anita Douglas, Lily's Mother: She doesn't remember thankfully. She does realise that she went through something pretty major. It started innocently. Anita Douglas, Lily's Mother: Lily started to get flu-like symptoms so I just treated her with Neurofen and Panadol. But that didn't work and neither did antibiotics. Then after two visits to a GP and two hospital admissions, she was finally diagnosed with sepsis. It's caused when the body's immune system overreacts to a bacterial infection, damaging tissues and organs. Dr Shane George, children's emergency specialist: We see about 50 children around Australia die from sepsis each year. The longer it takes us to make the diagnosis and start the antibiotics, the higher the chance of children dying. And diagnosis isn't easy, with current test taking up to two days to provide results - something Dr George wants to help change. He is part of a study investigating a new method using information from genes. Dr Shane George, children's emergency specialist: We look at what the body does immediately, as a response to the infection. Potentially providing a diagnosis in hours instead of days, but research comes at a cost. Gold Coast locals have already raised $56,000 but a further $44,000 is needed to carry-out the lifesaving research.
