Labour MP explains why he revealed his HIV status for World Aids Day
Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle told Sky's Adam Boulton why after decade after his diagnosis, he decided to reveal his HIV status in a speech in the House of Commons. The Kemptown and Peacehaven MP made the speech in tribute to the World Aids Day campaign. He told Sky News that he is 'hugely grateful for the NHS' and if people with HIV receive help they "can keep contributing to society in whatever way.” Russell-Moyle was diagnosed at the age of 22, then an employee working for the University of Bradford’s student union. He became a Labour MP beating the then-Conservative candidate Simon Kirby in 2016. He believes coming up to a decade of his diagnosis the timing was right for this speech. Former cabinet minister Chris Smith previously revealed his HIV positive status and Russell-Moyle said he contacted Mr Smith before his speech.
