Publishing (with) Communities: Social Care and Network Building Experiences in South America | Laura Daviña and Darío Marroche by Libby Leshgold Gallery

What capacities do artist-publishers have to aid their communities? How can we coordinate social care collectively across our networks? What are our obligations when it comes to exercising an ethic of care in our communities and beyond? This is an online conversation between two South American publishers, Darío Marroche (Montevideo) and Laura Daviña (São Paulo), about the theory and practice of their community-based work. Originally presented October 29. 2020. Darío Marroche is a Uruguayan architect and designer. Currently working as an independent publisher in visual arts, Marroche coordinates a publication studio from Montevideo called microutopías. Since 2014, his works have considered the publishing process as a creative act and reflective exercise of graphic activism. Marroche employs publication as an artistic practice in the generation of microutopías: space-time aesthetic experiences that are socially engaged. He has organized numerous community-based activities around self-publishing, art books, and visual poetry, and has also coordinated the Montevideo Art Book Fair since 2018. Laura Daviña is a Brazilian designer. She has worked since 2007 as an art editor, both in the editorial field as well as in independent and experimental projects. Laura was the co-founder of the autonomous art space Aurora in São Paulo, and from 2013 to 2018 she co-managed Edições Aurora’s publishing house. Currently she coordinates Publication Studio São Paulo at Parquinho Gráfico (a studio space at Casa do Povo cultural center), where she organizes, along with artists, workshops and community-based activities with graphic experimentation and collective creations in visual communication. Presented by the Libby Leshgold Gallery at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, and READ Books, as part of our continuing project Network Effects.
