Written for and performed here by Tokyo pianist Satoko Inoue. distant light ... quiet stream and a soft breath of winter light demonstrate the influence on my own compositions of works by a group of visual artists who might be considered minimal: Fred Sandback, Agnes Martin, John McLaughlin, and Callum Innes, amongst others. My compositions do not attempt to depict the paintings and/or sculpture of these artists but rather to represent the influences of their thinking in my own shaping of sonic experience. Artist Robert Irwin is known for saying, “seeing is forgetting the name of the thing on sees.” In an attempt to redirect the focus of the viewer from the object itself to the intangible sense of experience alone, these artists refocused their medium to open up the visual, spatial, and temporal aspects of experience. The influence of their art is reflected in my own work through attention given to making a place for listeners in the music. In doing so I have attempted to heightened the balance between sound and silence, and refocused my sensitivity on the inner life of the sonic elements employed.
