Dogs sense malaria in new trial by smelling socks
Dogs could potentially be used to detect malaria in people through smelling their socks, according to new research. Sky's Lorna Shaddick went to Milton Keynes where three dogs have been trained to distinguish between the scent of those infected with the malaria parasite and those who are healthy. The research has been conducted by experts at Durham University, the medical research council unit in The Gambia and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. World Health Organisation calculated in 2016 that malaria infected 216 million people worldwide and killed 445,000. Researchers believe the odour given off by the malaria parasite is attracting the mosquitoes that spread the disease.
